10 Strategies for Engaging Youth in Your Co-operative

ree

Investing in youth is an investment in our collective future. By nurturing co-operative values and principles within young people, we not only strengthen our co-operative organizations but also contribute to building a better world. At the Ontario Co-operative Association, we recognize the vital role that youth play in shaping the co-operative sector. Here are ten strategies to enhance youth engagement within your co-operative:

1. Create Space for Youth Ideas and Perspectives

Youth engagement contributes to dynamic co-operative organizations. Make room at the Boardroom table for young people’s fresh ideas and diverse viewpoints - their perspectives can drive innovation and positive change.

2. Inspire Future Co-operative Leaders

Demonstrate a clear path to a more co-operative future. Encourage young individuals to envision themselves as co-operative leaders. Highlight success stories and showcase the impact of co-operatives on communities.

3. Leverage Technological Skills

Embrace the technological prowess of young people. Their familiarity with digital tools and platforms can help your organization adapt, innovate, and thrive. Consider their insights when implementing new technologies.

4. Prioritize Co-operative Education

Educate youth about co-operative principles and practices. A solid understanding of co-operative businesses and their societal impact is essential for meaningful engagement. Offer workshops and resources to build their knowledge.

5. Model Co-operative Learning

Invest in your staff’s co-operative literacy. Equip them with the tools and knowledge to effectively communicate the value of co-operatives. When employees understand and appreciate co-operative principles, they can engage youth more effectively.

6. Meaningful Engagement

Connect with youth authentically. Understand the issues that matter to them and align your co-operative’s mission with their concerns. Shared values create a bridge for meaningful dialogue and collaboration.

7. Take Action

Improving youth engagement requires more than words. Be authentic, purposeful, and intentional. Create opportunities for lasting impact—whether through mentorship programs, youth-led initiatives, or community projects.

8. Cultivate a Co-operative Culture

Attract and retain engaged employees by fostering a co-operative ethos. Live out your co-operative values daily. Encourage young staff members to express their values and contribute to the co-operative’s mission.

9. Collaborate Across Stakeholders

Strength lies in unity. Work alongside other key stakeholders such as educational institutions and community organizations to amplify the impact of youth engagement efforts. Together, we can achieve more.

10. Invest in Youth Leadership

Nurture future leaders within your co-operative and community. Provide mentorship, training, and opportunities for growth. By instilling co-operative values early, we pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive world.

Remember, engaging youth isn’t just about securing the future of co-operatives; it’s about creating a world where everyone thrives. Let’s build that world together!
