Building Inclusive Co-operative Spaces: Supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ Employees, Members, and Customers

A rainbow coloured cloud

Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment is at the heart of co-operative business values. Co-ops are built on principles of equality, democracy, and solidarity—values that naturally align with fostering spaces where 2SLGBTQIA+ (abbreviated to LGBTQ+ for the purpose of this blog) employees, members, and customers feel seen, respected, and valued. Here’s how co-operative businesses can take meaningful action to ensure inclusivity for all.

1. Create & Uphold Clear Policies

Start by establishing clear anti-discrimination policies that explicitly protect LGBTQ+ individuals. These policies should cover employment practices, member engagement, and interactions with customers. Consider implementing gender-inclusive language in contracts, bylaws, and communications to ensure fairness across all levels of your organization.

2. Offer LGBTQ-Inclusive Education & Training

Education is key to fostering an inclusive workplace. Providing diversity and sensitivity training for employees, board members, and volunteers can help create awareness around LGBTQ+ issues, correct misinformation, and equip teams with tools to foster respectful interactions. Partnering with local LGBTQ+ organizations for workshops or resources can strengthen these efforts.

3. Cultivate a Safe & Affirming Workplace

Co-ops should create spaces where LGBTQ+ employees feel safe being their authentic selves. This can include having inclusive dress codes, gender-neutral restrooms, and ensuring that workplace cultures support pronoun usage and open discussions about diversity. Encouraging employees to share their pronouns in email signatures and meetings fosters respect and normalization.

4. Celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride & Visibility

Representation matters. Co-operatives can actively celebrate LGBTQ+ identities through Pride Month initiatives, highlighting LGBTQ+ contributions within the organization, and supporting events that uplift the community. Show your commitment by displaying inclusive signage, sharing LGBTQ+ success stories, and actively participating in LGBTQ+ celebrations throughout the year.

5. Ensure Equitable Access to Services

For co-operatives that offer health benefits, financial services, or housing, ensuring equitable access is vital. Review policies to guarantee they support LGBTQ+ individuals and families, including same-sex partner benefits and accessible healthcare resources. Having LGBTQ+ inclusive customer service training ensures clients are met with respect and understanding.

6. Collaborate with LGBTQ Communities

Building partnerships with local LGBTQ+ organizations or co-ops fosters community trust and strengthens co-op values. Supporting LGBTQ+-owned businesses, featuring diverse vendors, and ensuring representation in leadership positions can amplify voices and provide opportunities for growth.

7. Build a Culture of Continuous Learning

Inclusion is an ongoing commitment. Encourage feedback from LGBTQ+ employees and members on how the co-operative can improve its practices and ensure regular review of policies and initiatives to adapt to evolving needs. Inclusion isn't just a one-time effort—it’s a continuous journey toward equity and belonging.

Co-operatives have the power to shape inclusive spaces that align with the values of equality and shared success. By actively supporting LGBTQ+ employees, members, and clients, co-ops strengthen their communities and create environments where everyone thrives.

What steps will your co-op take to enhance inclusivity? Let’s continue building a better future, together!
