Co-op Interns make great employees!

Hiring a graduate of On Co-op's 6-month internship program could be a wonderful opportunity for your co-op or credit union!

The second set of interns for the 2009/2010 Co-operative Internship & Experience Program have completed their placements with co-operatives and credit unions across the province. Having begun their internships back in November of 2009, they have spent the past several months developing their job skills while learning about the co-operative model and how the principles apply to their own host organizations.

Interns also completed an intensive 3-day workshop series that together with various skill-building sessions, also provided them with an opportunity to visit several local co-ops and gain a more in-depth understanding of the co-operative business enterprise model and how it applies to diverse sectors.

Many of the interns have had a meaningful work experience and have begun to look for opportunities within the sector from which to transfer their new-found knowledge and skills. If you have an opening within your co-op and/or even some contract work that you would like completed, why not consider hiring one of our graduating interns!

Below are some of the biographies of the recent CIEP graduates.  To hire one of these people, or to learn more, e-mail Audrey Aczel  or call 1.888.745.5521 x.24.

OVERVIEW

CIEP 2009. Celebrating 6 years of linking co-operatives and young people.

On Co-op, in partnership with Service Canada - Career Skills, presents the Co-operative Internship Experience Program (CIEP).  These Internship postings are designed to assist recent college and university graduates (under 30) make the transition into the world of work. And introduce them to the world of co-operative enterprise.

CIEP is a wage-subsidized employment and skill-building program. It provides host organizations within Ontario's co-operative sector with Interns, while building the skills and knowledge of a new generation of leaders.
Hosts are co-operative organizations and sector partners.  These organizations must be part of the membership of On Co-op, or apply for membership in the Association, to take part in the CIEP program.
Interns are recent college or university graduates, under 30 years of age,  who wish to be placed in a co-operative enterprise for 6-months and earn a reasonable wage during that time.

The CIEP program, which began back in 2002, has been very successful in matching up talented young individuals (who are looking to begin their careers and to gain a meaningful work experience), with hosts who are in need of assistance in completing special projects and tasks. Many interns have found permanent work within a co-operative upon completion of their placements - a wonderful way to keep youth both engaged and active in the co-op sector!

Don't confuse co-op placements used by the school system with this initiative by the Ontario co-operative sector to provide education, training and experience within the co-operative sector. CIEP promotes, and expands upon, the very successful co-operative enterprise model.

To learn more about the Co-operative Intern Experience Program, visit the Host and Intern pages, or contact On Co-op's Public Affairs Manager, 519.763.8271 ext. 24.

  HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

CIEP PROVIDES MANY BENEFITS TO HOSTS/EMPLOYERS
By hosting Interns for the 26-week period, co-operative employers ('hosts') can gain assistance with specific projects of importance to their operations, while providing the Intern with valuable job skills, networking opportunities, and exposure to the values and principles of the co-operative movement.  Once the internship is complete, co-ops may elect to retain the Intern and not subsidize his/her wages.

INTERNS

Click here to go to the CIEP Intern page, which has more detailed information.

Interns develop new skills and gain real-world experiences  and knowledge during their 26-week placement.   Interns are exposed to the co-op principles in action, deepening their understanding of the co-operative and credit union movements. Interns also develop networks and contacts within the co-op or credit union sector that may lead to other employment opportunities. Matching Interns with a personal mentor in their Host organizations and job search assistance in the co-operative sector is an integral part of the CIEP experience.

CIEP OFFERS INTERNS:

  • A challenging work placement of 26 weeks in a co-op, credit union or sector related organization.
  • A personal mentor in your host organization.
  • A Workplace Employability Workshop series to build job skills, link up with other Interns, and gain a deeper career focus.
  • Networking and self-promotion opportunities.
  • Job search assistance in the co-operative sector as the Internship completes.

Qualifications: These positions are designed to assist youth [30 and under, who are recent College or University graduates, and who are out of school] as they make the transition into the working world.

Please note:  Interns must complete all 26-weeks of the CIEP program.  The starting date and the ending date are fixed and cannot be altered.  Interns are expected to work 35 hours a week.  There is no provision in the program for taking holidays.  Any overtime worked will be compensated directly by the Host, and not reimbursed by On Co-op or the CIEP program.

To Become an Intern: Read all of the information on the Intern and Host pages of this website.  During the job-posting phase, apply for the positions listed on the career pages of this website (most also appear on the federal Job Bank).  Send your resume, cover letter and references to On Co-op for each position that you qualify for, clearly indicating the position you are applying for, and for which organization. Do not send your application directly to the Host Organization.

HOSTS

Click here to go to the CIEP Host page, which has detailed information, forms and procedure manuals.

CIEP OFFERS HOSTS:

  • A salary-supplemented Intern for 26 weeks, at a cost to each employer of just 8 week's wages (approximately $3,000.00). Hosts must pay a minimum of $3.00/hour, however they generally pay their interns more. Often Interns work on a special project, or are hired to bring a new perspective to an existing position. Suitable staff must be available for supervision and guidance of the Intern.

Qualifications: Host organizations must be Members or Supporters of the Ontario Co-operative Association (or members of an On Co-op member in the case of Federations), and organized as co-operatives or credit unions. (If you wish to recruit an Intern, but are not currently part of the On Co-op membership, please email Audrey Aczel.)

To Become a Host: Complete the Host Organization Application form, found on the Host page of this website. On Co-op will confirm the information and then promote the job placement on this web site, the HRDC Job Bank and through other co-operative networks. After the Intern application deadline has been reached, suitable applicants will be forwarded to each Host organization for their consideration.

CIEP: AN INSTANT SUCCESS STORY

INTERNS REMAIN IN THE CO-OP SECTOR AFTER THEIR INTERNSHIP

30 positions in total were offered during the two phases of the 2007-2008 CIEP program.  Of the 30 Interns who went through the 2007-2008 CIEP program, 14 found ongoing employment in the co-operative sector. 4 became employed outside of the sector, and 3 chose to go back to school.

On Co-op successfully launched CIEP in Spring 2002. It was created to respond to the need for wage-assisted job opportunities within the co-op and credit union movements. More importantly, CIEP was designed to combine the co-operative sector's commitment to social and economic principles with its dedication to professional excellence, innovation and growth. CIEP is also a way to expose young people inside and outside the co-op and credit union movement to the diverse co-operative sector. Five years later, the program has expanded significantly and is eagerly anticipated by co-op sector organizations each time it is offered by On Co-op.

On Co-op's Co-operative Internship Experience Program is one of our Lifelong Co-operative Education initiatives and perhaps one of the most important steps in the integration of young people into the co-op and credit union sector.
