OVERVIEW: THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE THE CYL MAGIC BEGINS
Co-operative Young Leaders is a summer experience unlike any other. This week-long camp brings young people together from all across Ontario to learn about, and practice, communication and leadership through co‑operative activities. Since its inception in 1967 to its 42nd year in 2009, more than 2700 young people have gone through Ontario co-operative young leaders programs.
Sure CYL has all the things that make summer camp fun- hikes, campfires, swimming, volleyball and hanging out. But our summer program offers so much more! In fact, at the Co-operative Young Leaders summer program we bet you'll have the best summer experience ever!
CYL has three main goals:
- To provide young people with a fantastic summer camp experience
- To develop leadership and communication skills and foster self-confidence
- To create a stronger awareness of co-ops and co-operative principles
Along the way, other great things happen. CYL-ers develop new support networks and peer groups; they have the opportunity to learn more about themselves and the world in which they live; and they are exposed to skills and thought processes.
CYL-ers participate in exercises and activities which emphasize teamwork and group development. CYL is all about learning and practicing new ideas and new ways of doing things in a safe and supportive environment. CYL sessions build on one another, and taking all three levels is recommended.
Each day of camp is structured around specific goals combining recreation, learning opportunities and fun. Daily themes may include self-awareness, communication, team building, conflict resolution, decision making, leadership, and general co‑operative and credit union knowledge.
CYL develops young leaders while providing a great summer experience:
- A flexible curriculum balances outdoor activities, participatory learning sessions and personal development opportunities.
- Guest speakers, field trips and participant-driven sessions keep the program relevant, interesting and fun.
- Discussions on hot topics that affect young people and their sponsoring co‑ops.
During their CYL stay, participants will learn how to be a leader and a team player, how to co-operate, solve problems, and develop an increased sense self-awareness and personal balance
And unlike many other summer camps, participants have a say in what happens. As a group, the young leaders help decide on social activities, sports, and the rules and regulations of your stay. CYL sessions incorporate hands on activities, where participants get to DO as opposed to just watching or listening. It's eight days that will change lives!

BERNIE DALY FUND SUPPORTS CYL
Bernie Daly was GROWMARK, Inc.'s Ontario Region Manager and a dedicated co-operative champion. One of Bernie's goals before he passed away earlier this year was to find a way to support the growth of the Co-operative Young Leaders (CYL) program. Through the Bernie Daly Memorial Fund, he will be able to do just that.
The monies collected would provide a long-term pool which will be used to help support youth who cannot participate in CYL due to poor finances or lack of sponsorship. The Fund could also be used to enhance the program through the purchase of new equipment or other program essentials.
So far, more than $37,000 has been pledged. Organizations or individuals in all co-op sectors are invited to participate in the Fund. Through an arrangement with the Ontario Credit Charitable Foundation, all donations are tax-deductible.
