SIGN THE ON CO-OP PETITION. On Co-op's GR committee has created a petition that requests that the province of Ontario support a broad range of policy initiatives that would benefit both co-operatives and credit unions, such as: updating and improving the regulatory environment, implementing tax incentives to encourage investment and establishing a Co-operatives Secretariat.
All co-ops and individuals in the Ontario co-op movement are requested to download the petition and distribute it to your locations, members, boards and so on.
IMPORTANT: Only original copies of the petition can be tabled in the Ontario legislature. Email or photocopy versions CANNOT BE ACCEPTED. Download the petition here. More information here.
REGISTER NOW FOR THE CO-OPERATIVE MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM. Applications are now being accepted for the second cohort of the Co-op Management Certificate Program, which begins October 22, 2010.
The Certificate Program is comprised of a series of e-learning modules, webinars and face-to-face intensive sessions. The e-learning modules may be accessed 24/7, at your convenience. The intensives - which present unique content not found in the online components - are delivered by industry leaders and academic experts, and provide a space for enriched reflection, debate, and analysis. The intensive sessions are held in residence at the Executive Learning Centre of the Schulich School of Business.
Graduates of the Program receive a Certificate from the Schulich School of Business. More information here. Download the brochure here.
2012 has been declared by the United Nations to be the International Year of Co-operatives. This will be an exciting time to celebrate our co-op business model, promote co-operatives, and band together regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally. Learn more here.
DISCUSSION ON THE 50% RULE. In Ontario, provincially incorporated co-operatives must conduct at least 50 percent of their business with their members. Since co-operatives define themselves as democratic organizations, primarily focusing on providing goods or services to their members, the 50 percent rule can be an essential part of that definition. It is not clear if there is a majority opinion for either retaining or removing the 50% Rule. Read two views here.

Changes to the Ontario Co-operative Corporations Act. Changes were made to our Act December 17, and are effective immediately. The recent passage of the HST Bill in the Ontario legislature made changes to a number of other acts, including the Co-operative Corporations Act. Some of the changes are significant and will provide more effective ways for co-ops to operate and govern themselves. Here is a summary of the changes.
