Bringing the voice of the sector to decision makers.

SIGN THE ON CO-OP PETITION.  On Co-op has launched a province-wide petition asking fellow co-operators to support “creating an environment that encourages the development of co-operatives; allowing them to compete on an equal footing with other forms of business enterprise…”

The petition, one of the Government Relations Committee’s most recent initiatives, requests that the province of Ontario support a broad range of policy initiatives that would benefit both co-operatives and credit unions, such as: updating and improving the regulatory environment, implementing tax incentives to encourage investment and establishing a Co-operatives Secretariat.

Once all the signatures are collected by On Co-op, they will be distributed to MPPs, who will be asked to table them in legislature. On Co-op hopes to make an announcement as to the results during the October 20th Gala over Co-op week!

The petition is  an effective and easy way to engage the entire co-op sector in our advocacy efforts, while raising much-needed awareness of the its strength and diversity, to our members of provincial parliament. If enough signatures are collected, the potential impact could be significant.

Please show your support for creating a more favorable environment for the growth and development of co-operatives and credit union, by downloading a copy of the petition [LINK BELOW], and asking your members, boards, employees, and other sector supporters and stakeholders. to sign it.

Send the original signed copies to On Co-op, Attention:Audrey Aczel, at 450 Speedvale Ave. West, Suite #101, Guelph, Ontario N1H 7Y6.

IMPORTANT:  Only original copies of the petition can be tabled in the Ontario legislature.  Emailed, scanned or photocopied versions CANNOT BE ACCEPTED. You must mail or deliver an original copy of the signed petition to On Co-op. Download the petition with instructions here [recommended].

MPP RECEPTION 2010.  On Wednesday, April 21, over 30 MPPs, 20 government staff and public policy makers, along with 100 co-op leaders and stakeholders, came together for our annual Queen’s Park Reception. The reception continues to raise the profile of the sector through communicating key messages to government about the need for and benefits of developing a mutually beneficial partnership.

One of the main goals of the reception is to put a face to the sector – to show the strength and diversity of Ontario’s co-operatives. Our advocacy efforts have faced the challenge of building awareness of who we are, what we do and what we can do if a public/co-operative collaboration existed. This year, 100 co-op representatives came and showed just how well one sector that crosses many industries can come together to form one, unified voice!

We were also pleasantly surprised at the number of new co-operators who attended, proving there is great interest and dedication for all of us to continue to work together towards our mutual goals. There was plenty of opportunity to learn about other co-ops and create what we hope will be valuable connections to others in the sector for the future.

We would like to extend a warm thank you to everyone who came. We truly appreciate the time you spent speaking with elected members of parliament and their staff, and we are very interested in getting some feedback on those you spoke with, as well as on the reception in general.  We’ll see you there again next year!
