Growing your Co-operative

As a co-operative grows and develops, the way it is governed and operates must also evolve. To help you succeed, OCA has a number of ways to support emerging co-operatives:

  1. GOVERNANCE TRAINING. New and/or experienced directors can benefit from developing knowledge and skills as they pertain to the unique role of co-operative board directors. We have partnered with Gay Lea Foods' Co-operative to host a one-day workshop based on their award-winning "Leadership in Governance" program, to provide these tools for those who need it. We can also work with you to design and host a governance workshop tailored to your organization's specific needs. Contact us to see how we can help, or learn more about our Leadership in Governance workshops.
  2. OTHER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES. With over 60 years of combined experience in the co-operative sector, the OCA staff team can work with you to design training sessions for your organization in the areas of strategic planning, meeting facilitation, government relations and conference/AGM planning, among others. We also run a number of conferences and events that provide specific training in these areas. Contact us to learn more, or visit our Events page to find out what we have planned for this year.
  3. CO-OP SERVICE PROVIDERS. OCA has developed a list of Service Providers from our Associate Membership that have special expertise in co-operatives (e.g., lawyers, accountants, insurance providers, etc.)
  4. INVESTMENT AND LOAN PROGRAMS. There are various loan and support programs available from the government. Contact us for more information.
  5. OUR MEMBERSHIP. By joining our membership, you become part of a network of co-operatives that believe in the co-operative principles and are invested in the future of the greater co-operative movement. It is through the support of our members that OCA is able to develop and deliver co-operative research, education, advocacy, networks, and development tools and resources that support the success and sustainability of Ontario's co-operatives. Our members practice their democratic rights by participating in the Annual General Meetings, accessing our conferences and workshops at a reduced rate, and are profiled in our monthly newsletters and our website, among other benefits. Learn more
